"My mom, sister, and I volunteered for a summer here, years ago. The staff was great and the facility was always clean; the tasks we did were surface level but everything seemed genuinely cared for. My sister has autism so she was often too old or tall for activities that she wanted to participate in. In this case, younger kids were generally given the task of reading to the cats; they made a kind acceptation for her. It was a great experience; I bonded with my family, helped care for the animals they rescue, got some fresh air while we walked dogs on the park trails next door, and ended up adopting one of our own! I love that they’re a no-kill shelter. Our Bella was picked up and returned to the previous owner 3 times before they decided to surrender her. She was mistreated, scared, and defeated. AVHS gave her a second chance and us the opportunity to find her. I don’t live in the area anymore but it makes me smile when I happen to drive by!"
