Animal Farm Foundation

#88 in United States, #5 in New York, #1 in Poughkeepsie

Animal Farm Foundation (AFF) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization built on the principle that all dogs are individuals. Our Foundation relies on science-based information on animal behavior and public policy, including breed-specific legislation and housing insurance discrimination, derived from our subsidiary National Canine Research Council, a think tank for science and public policy. AFF’s team offers regional and national initiatives that support dogs and the people who care for them in their communities. Current AFF programs include our Old Friends program, which is an onsite and foster-based program that gives senior dogs in shelters across the country an opportunity to live out their lives in a loving home. Additionally, we have dogs on the younger side that are also apart of our adoption program, who’ve come to us to await their new homes while enjoying the farm life. Our Family Pantry program recognizes pets as family and, especially during tough times, provide a way to help pets stay with their families. Furthermore, AFF staff consult with animal shelters across the country on evidence-based, progressive and inclusive enrichment, training, marketing and adoption policies. We also provide toolkits and resources for best practices to governments and community organizations as well as animal shelters and individual dog owners.

My family has adopted 3 dogs through CH Boxer Rescue. The volunteers that work to find these dogs homes are great. Their primary concern is finding the right fit for each dog and family and they aren't shy about suggesting dogs that would work for each potential adopter. My suggestion when working with this organization is get get your adoption form filled out prior to falling in love with any of their adoptable dogs, and to remember that everyone you interact with is likely a volunteer with a full-time job elsewhere (meaning be patient.) There are lots of dog rescues between here (Maine) and the Tri-State area, but CHBR will always be our first choice. We gladly made the 16 hours round-trip car rides to get our dogs three times and would do it again in a heart beat!

The dogs are what matters. One comment on Facebook packwalk post in 2019, Lisa’s reply was all are welcome, and that was my beginning to, volunteering with this great group of people who were all thee for the dogs. Spending time with them to help socialize them, to help them trust and to just be themselves. That’s what I thought I was doing for them. In truth they gave me a purpose. I celebrated for them when they are adopted, each one has taken a piece of my heart, something that would never have been possible without Lisa’s drive dedication and inspiration that we are all a part of their journey.

ARF Beacon is a small shelter (I call it “the little shelter that could!”) that is dedicated to providing exceptional love and individual attention to each dog that comes through their doors. While having greater resources would be beneficial, their volunteers are incredibly dedicated and make up for any shortcomings. The President of the shelter is admirable for her dedication to force-free and positive training methods. Although the process of vetting potential adopters can be extensive and may not always please applicants, it is necessary to ensure that each dog finds the best-suited home. While it is not an easy task, it is important, and the shelter takes the time to do it right.

I began following Muddy Paws in 2018 on social media, and was so impressed with their dedication to placing dogs in loving homes that I began saving money to eventually adopt my own pup from them. In the meantime, I became a participating artist in their annual Pawtrait for Good fundraiser, which is one of the most fun fundraising events I've ever seen from a dog rescue. Fast forward to 2022 and I was finally in a position to bring home my very own pup. The entire process of the screening phone call to the actual adoption event was seamless, and all of the staff and volunteers were kind, helpful, and so clearly dedicated to matching dogs with the right family. My pup Maní (formerly Maddox) is now about to turn two and he is the joy of my life, and it's all thanks to Muddy Paws! I'm forever grateful they chose to pull him out of a shelter so that I could meet him, and that they continue doing this for an incredible amount of dogs every year.

Second chance is a shelter in Syracuse NY. It was started as a program where county inmates can train the dogs before they get adopted out. Covid changed a lot but through the pandemic they continued with their cause, pulling dogs from our overcrowded city shelter. I adopted my dog from them in May 2020. When he was found he was wondering alone and was so skinny. He was not doing well at the city shelter and was almost euthanized due to the stress and anxiety he had from being there, that’s when second chance stepped in. They make sure their dogs are a good fit with potential families, not just first come first serve. I am so grateful they saved my beautiful boy, he makes my life better daily. They continue to be a boots on the ground rescue and are struggling through the current issues with shelter overcrowding.
