How to Create a Comprehensive Dog First Aid Kit thumbnail

We all know it's smart to keep first aid supplies on hand for you and your human family members. We can't forget about our canine companions, too! A dedicated dog first aid kit makes it possible for you to provide immediate care when things go wrong. The right supplies can prevent an accident, unexpected health issue, or other medical emergency from turning into a tragedy.

Here’s what you need to know to put an effective canine first aid bag together.

  • Why should you create a dog first aid kit?
  • When should you bring your emergency supplies with you?
  • Supplies to put in your canine first aid kit
  • Where can you buy first aid supplies?
  • Further resources to keep your dog safe and healthy

1) Why should you make a dog first aid kit?

Creating a dog first aid kit means you'll be ready for everything from minor injuries and illnesses to potentially serious emergencies. Life with dogs can be unpredictable! But a little preparation can make sure we pet parents have everything we need.

A prepared first aid kit means you can respond immediately

In the event of an injury or sudden illness, having a dog first aid kit on hand allows you to provide immediate care. This can prevent minor issues from becoming more severe. Sometimes quick action can bypass the need for professional veterinary treatment entirely.

First aid kits help you be prepared in emergencies away from home

You may encounter situations with your dog where access to veterinary care is delayed. A well-equipped first aid kit helps ensure your dog's safety while awaiting full treatment! This can make a huge difference if you:

  • adventure in the backcountry
  • live several miles away from your nearest animal clinic
  • enjoy traveling with your dog
  • experience a natural disaster in your community

2) When should you have your canine first aid emergency kit with you?

The short answer: Everywhere you go with your dog! Here are some situations where it's especially important to have your dog first aid kit on hand.

Outdoor adventures

Bring emergency medical supplies every time you go hiking, camping, backpacking, or engage in other adventurous activities with your dog. Outdoor environments present various hazards:

This is why many Sniffspot hosts provide their own first aid kits on site. It's one way we keep our private dog parks in case of emergency situations.

Traveling away from home

Whether you're taking a road trip or flying, it's a good idea to have a first aid kit for your dog. New environments are packed with unfamiliar risks, strange food, and other potential stressors.

Dog sports and training sessions

If you participate in dog sports like agility, mushing, flyball, obedience or field trials, and more, make sure there's a first aid kit at the venue. Dogs can sustain injuries and experience stress—especially heat-related illnesses—during training and competition.

What if your first aid kit is too big to carry everywhere?

  • You can always consider creating a “mini” canine first aid kit that you attach to your regular treat pouch—or even to your dog's leash—if your main supplies are too bulky.
  • Many pet parents keep their first aid bags in the trunk of their car so they're easy to access when out of the house.
  • Consider having one "at home" first aid kit and one "travel" first aid kit for your dog.

3) First aid supplies: What goes into a dog first aid kit?

A well-prepared dog first aid kit should contain essential supplies to address common injuries, illnesses, and emergencies you may encounter with your dog.

Here's a list of basic items to include in your dog's first aid kit!

Emergency contact information

  • Contact information for your regular veterinarian
  • Contact information for the nearest 24-hour emergency veterinary clinic
  • Animal poison control hotline number (like the ASPCA Poison Control: 1-888-426-4435)

Important documents

  • Copies of your dog's medical records, vaccination history, and identification (microchip and tags)
  • Instructions for administering medications, if applicable

Basic medical supplies

  • Gauze pads and rolls
  • Adhesive tape
  • Sterile saline solution (for flushing wounds and eyes)
  • Hydrogen peroxide (3%) for inducing vomiting (only under veterinary guidance)
  • Tick remover tool
  • Sterile lubricant or water-based lubricant
  • Cotton balls and swabs
  • Disposable gloves

Wound care supplies

  • Antiseptic wipes or solution (e.g., povidone-iodine)
  • Antiseptic ointment or cream
  • Sterile non-stick bandages or pads
  • Self-adhering bandage (e.g., vet wrap)
  • Adhesive bandages (for small cuts and paw injuries)

Tools

  • Medical scissors with rounded tips (for cutting fur and bandages)
  • Tweezers with a fine point (for splinter and tick removal)
  • Digital thermometer for measuring your dog's temperature
  • Syringe or eyedropper (for administering liquids or medications)

Prescriptions and over-the-counter medications

  • Any prescription medications your dog requires
  • Over-the-counter medications like antihistamines (only use under veterinary guidance)
  • Non-prescription pain relief medication (only use under veterinary guidance)

Emergency items

  • Muzzle (in case your dog is in pain and you need to handle them)
  • Emergency blanket or space blanket for warmth
  • Emergency sling or stretcher, emergency dog harness, or a large piece of fabric (like a towel or blanket) for carrying an injured dog
  • Satellite emergency phone if you plan to visit remote areas

A dog wears a basket muzzle while the owner gently holds underneath his chin

Miscellaneous other supplies

  • Extra leash and collar
  • Extra ID tags with updated contact information
  • Water bottle and portable water bowl
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Pen and notepad for recording information
  • A pet emergency care handbook for reference
  • Disposable bags for waste disposal
  • Towels or paper towels for cleaning and drying
  • Your dog's favorite treats or food for comfort and distraction

What kind of container should you store your first aid kit in?

Choose a waterproof, durable, and easily transportable container like a plastic toolbox with a handle or a dedicated pet first aid kit bag.

4) Where can you get canine first aid supplies?

You can find canine first aid supplies at multiple sources. Local pet stores, online retailers, veterinary clinics, and even your local pharmacy or grocery store should have some necessary items on hand.

Here are top places to look!

  • Most pet supply stores carry a range of first aid supplies for dogs, including bandages, antiseptic solutions, tweezers, and more. You can visit stores like PetSmart, Petco, or your local independent pet store.
  • Many online retailers specialize in pet supplies and offer a wide selection of canine first aid supplies. Websites like Amazon, Chewy, and PetMeds are convenient options for purchasing these items online.
  • Your veterinarian's office may sell canine first aid supplies, as they often provide recommendations for pet owners. Some veterinary clinics have on-site stores where you can purchase pet supplies.
  • Many common first aid items, such as sterile gauze, adhesive tape, and hydrogen peroxide, can be found at pharmacies and drug stores. These stores are convenient for assembling your own canine first aid kit.

When buying canine first aid supplies, consider your dog's specific needs and the activities you engage in together. Customize your kit to address any health conditions or allergies.

5) Keep your first aid kit up to date

Remember to regularly check your dog's first aid kit for expired or missing items. Replenish supplies as necessary! That way they're up-to-date and ready for use in case of an emergency.

6) Further resources for canine first aid

The more you know ahead of time, the better you'll be able to help your pup in emergency situations.

You may also consider signing up for some pet emergency education offered by a nearby professional dog training, boarding, vet, or daycare facility.
