We often rescue the abandoned, lost and forgotten animals. Fiercely advocating for the animals in our care. We are very different from other animal rescue organizations. We are "boots on the ground" in our community while passionately fight for the dogs and animals no one else has the courage to take on. Laila's Legacy Animal Rescue

#15 in United States, #1 in Washington DC, #1 in Washington

Laila's Legacy was founded with a mission to ensure dogs impacted by breed bias and behavioral or physical challenges have a chance at a better life. Laila, our name sake, was an incredible dog who had a behavioral challenge that caused aggression towards dogs. Laila loved her humans, and especially our Co-Founder, Ashe. She was a large bully breed so her size combined with local breed bias meant sometimes people were afraid of her. But that didn't stop her from winning people over with her goofy energy. The rescue she was with did not have the resources to support Laila and couldn't find a suitable partner to take on her care because of her size and breed. As a result she was euthanized. Laila's Legacy was founded to save dogs like Laila. We never want a dog to be euthanized because an owner, a volunteer, or an organization didn't have the resources or because breed bias stopped them from getting the help they deserved. Dogs like Laila deserve a chance at life and that's what we're here to do!

With a focus on community partnerships, this forward-facing approach works to ensure safe and healthy environments for people and pets. The department promotes responsible pet ownership, implements programs to reduce animal overpopulation, and has formed innovative partnerships and programs to increase the City’s effectiveness in supporting animals and humans in Mobile. As part of this approach, a newly modernized Animal Services facility is currently in design and will be built in a new location central to all parts of the City, and many new positions are also being added to further our mission and programs. El Dorado,Arkansas, is famous for the 1920’s Oil Boom and it is the World Headquarters for Murphy Oil Corporation. Do you know what else we are proud of? Union County Animal Protection Society. Tanya Jackson is our very caring shelter manager who never gives up and never quits saving all the animals she can.Shes almost never off the clock and answers every call. She has an almost mystical, calming and loving spirit with the animals. We lovingly call her “Mama T”. Now, she may not be quite as charming when dealing with neglectful or abusive owners, but someone has to and they deserve it. Managing an animal shelter in the South is one of the most difficult jobs out there. So much of our area is rural and puppy mills are everywhere. If you want a dog or cat, just walk a block and you will find a stray or two or three. Our shelter is always overflowing but Mama T. Is extremely resourceful in finding suitable fosters, of which I am one, and doing her best to post adorable pictures on social media of cats and dogs needing homes. She has managed to procure an animal transport service that regularly ships adoptable pets to homes in states up North that don’t have anything near the overpopulation we have. I am proud to nominate UCAPS as one of the very best or THE BEST animal shelters in the USA!

    Last chance Arkansas

In 2005 Last Chance Arkansas was founded as a 100% volunteer based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based out of Central Arkansas. Last Chance AR believes in advocating for the abused, abandoned, and neglected animals across the state that cannot speak for themselves. Working in conjunction with various clinics, Last Chance AR travels statewide to urban and rural communities to provide comfort, safety, and love to animals in need. Hundreds of lives have been saved through our efforts, which include a spay and neuter program for impoverished pet owners, frequent visits to rescue animals from shelters suffering from a desperate lack of funding, and the complete inability for any of our patient and dedicated volunteers to turn down a creature in need. We serve as a resource to our community and local pet owners by providing education and information on responsible pet ownership including the importance of spay/neuter, positive behavior training and good nutrition. We work with committed volunteers, veterinarians, fosters, and trainers to provide health care and temporary homes to animals deserving of another chance. Our number one priority is ensuring the health of all of our dogs and carefully screening and well matching ‘furever” homes.

In 2008 my coworker mentioned that she was facilitating a dog rescue from China to San Francisco, and she shared a picture of the dog. In China, this dog was a street dog and had been hit by a car. A good samaritan took her to a vet, who decided to save her life even though the dog was considered "unadoptable" for this part of China as a street dog with critical injuries. The vet thought the dog would just live out her days in his back kennel. I want to be very clear here about how DPS as a rescue, specifically, changed our lives: DPS's dog rescue partner in China knew the dog was adoptable if she could be sent to America; the vet handed her over, DPS facilitated her documentation (elaborate for USA import) and plane ticket, and the dog made the long flight from Shanghai to San Francisco. Most rescues simply do not go to this amount of effort for any animal, let alone a street dog with major scarring, a lot of anxiety, and obvious high needs. But this dog was exactly who I'd been looking for for years: she had 3 legs, 1 eye, 1 crushed ear, and was small enough to travel on planes. I messaged my coworker immediately, and she introduced me to Doggie Protective Services: their workflow, their application process, their timelines. I was impressed by how much they already knew about this little being who was currently somewhere over the ocean. I applied for my dog before she was ever officially listed, with the contingency that we had to cat test her because I had several extremely sensitive cats. The application was long and detailed and gave me plenty of space to explain why this was the dog for me, and what kind of life the rescue could expect her to have. After we were approved, the rescue set up a driver for the dog to my apartment so she could meet my cats, with no pressure as the driver would wait if the cats hated the dog. But it was game over for all of us in minutes. My dog won over the most difficult cat, then my husband. I was in love within hours. I've had that DPS dog, Lana, for almost 6 years now, and she's truly my soul dog. DPS saw her potential from a photo in a vet's kennel, and DPS saved her life. I have never been so grateful to a rescue. The odds were against me ever meeting the dog pressed against my side as I write this. DPS made it happen. I hope you're able to recognize DPS so that what they did for Lana (and me), they can do for other dogs in need.

We adopted one of our dogs from Helping Paws. It was a great experience. Unfortunately our little guy was dumped at a local kill shelter in a box along with his siblings. All of them had Parvo. He and his siblings were pulled and cared for in a foster home through Helping Paws. Miraculously all the puppies survived and found homes. Because he was in a foster home he was well cared for and socialized. He was adopted then returned. We then adopted him at about 9 months old and it was a great experience. His transition to his forever home was good because he had been fostered and lived in home. We even got pictures and videos of him as a puppy in his foster home. When you rescue you do not get this many details or pictures and videos of the animal. Rescues like Helping Paws save lives every day. Without their help to pull from high kill shelters, so many more animals would die. Currently there is a crisis with the number of animals that are being dumped in high kill shelters. Very few shelters are truly no kill! Helping Paws is creative in finding ways to fund raise and find generous people to volunteer in so many ways. We need more rescues where the animals are in foster homes.

A Purposeful Life Animal Rescue is an amazing supporter of the true underdogs! They have recently accepted a loving dog into their APL Family that has a spinal cord injury. His name is Tango. A dozen other rescues were contacted and each and every one of them declined to accept Tango into their rescue. APL found a way to give Tango a chance to walk again! They located an experience medical foster home to care for Tango. They are finding multiple ways to financially support Tango's medical needs. They are arranging for the key first step in getting Tango an MRI to help set the path for his next medical steps, including physical therapy and rehabilitation. This is the true meaning of rescue! Without A Purposeful Life Animal Rescue, Tango's future looked uncertain and bleak. APL brought hope and determination that Tango will again walk!

A Purposeful Life Animal Rescue & Sanctuary is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit volunteer-based animal welfare organization dedicated to rescuing homeless dogs and cats directly within our community, overcrowded shelters and other unforeseen circumstances. We were founded in 2022 by a small group of animal advocates in Iowa, after recognizing the need to support not only strays and relinquished animals in our area, but areas all across the country. Our startup mission is to offer support to the many local animals in need of homes, by partnering with area shelters and rescues. In addition, we are committed to providing behavioral, medical and low cost resources to people who are considering surrender, in an effort to keep their pets in their homes and out of the shelter system

Founded by Beatrice Martin Peck in 1946 to serve Franklin County's homeless animals, Prairie Paws' first name was the Franklin County Humane society. Through her own expense and effort, Beatrice established and named the first building The Bea Martin Peck Animal Shelter on March 25th 1947, which was completed and welcomed it's first residents in 1948. Beatrice and her volunteers also investigated reports of animal cruelty, and their efforts led to the enactment of many ordinances and regulations regarding animal care that remain today. Beatrice never stopped advocating for helpless animals until her death in 1967. The animal shelter she founded would continue to save lives for more than 60 years after her passing. In 2010 a similar group of hard-working animal advocates designed, funded and built a state-of-the-art facility under the current name "Prairie Paws Animal Shelter". Prairie Paws Animal Shelter has grown tremendously but is still a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) animal shelter operating under the same philosophies with which it was established over 70 years ago. The Manhattan location, also known as the T Russell Reitz Animal Shelter, was added in 2023 in partnership with the City of Manhattan KS and other area municipalities. Roughly 5,000 animals a year are served through our various programs at our two facilities.

Four years ago, I retired and my son said "you need a dog or you will go crazy." I applied to Tier Haven. They called my references and talked to me. I then met three German Shepherds. One of them came up to me, leaned against me and looked up at me with a crooked smile. There was no doubt, he had chosen me. They only required that I change his name, they hated his name-- Col. Mustard. And that is how I got Angus, my constant companions for the last four years. He is a wonderful, healthy, and happy friend. T

At Tier Haven our hearts belong to the working dog breeds of Kentucky - German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois being our most common companions. The Tier Haven family is comprised of volunteers, adopters, and donors who have a passionate love for these working breeds and all of their quirks. We are brought together by the dogs that steal our hearts while chewing the shoe collection. Tier Haven Rescue, Inc was originally incorporated in 1996 under the name ARK Project, Inc and is a long standing member of the animal rescue community in Kentucky. Originally an all-breed rescue Tier Haven shifted to focus on working dogs with the rise of breed specific legislation which was leading to larger numbers of German Shepherds, and other working dogs, being euthanized. We are rooted in Kentucky with a strong passion for enacting change within the state which has a long journey towards building our animal welfare laws. Even as breed specific legislation has dwindled there are still large numbers of working dogs finding themselves at risk of euthanasia due to a lack of breed knowledge and/or training. Tier Haven is committed to giving these dogs a second chance and we are all honored to be part of their paths to a better life.

I always knew I wanted to open my heart and home to dogs in need, but I never imagined the incredible journey that awaited me at Rescue Charlie's Friends. Adopting from Rescue Charlie's Friends wasn't just about gaining three amazing dogs; it was about giving them a second chance at a happy life. Seeing them blossom in their forever home, full of love and joy, is the most rewarding experience. If you're looking to add a furry companion to your life, I can't recommend Rescue Charlie's Friends enough. They have a heart of gold and a passion for finding loving homes for dogs in need. You might just walk in looking for one dog, but you might leave with three times the love, just like me!

Rescue Charlie’s Friends was established in 2018 because we love dogs and want them to have the best life possible. Many dogs lost their homes due to fire, floods or hurricanes. Others have been abandoned, neglected or abused. Whatever the cause, our mission is to rescue them and match them with a loving forever family. Most of our dogs come from high-kill shelters. The shelters do the best they can but due to limited facilities, dogs can’t stay long. Dogs must be moved out quickly or be put down. These are Charlie’s Friends. These are the dogs that we focus on. We stay in touch with shelters and volunteers in Texas, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and elsewhere. We bring the dogs to Maine where Fosters care for them until they are adopted. We rescue as many dogs as we can but we always need more help.

    Key to lions heart rescue

Key to Lion’s Heart Rescue was founded in January 2018 in honor of Lion, a dog who made a tremendous impact on so many lives. Lion was dumped at a very high kill shelter where his time was up. Without knowing his past, he was pulled by a rescue and placed into a home. Lion was then moved nine times over the course of one year in an effort to find the right home. Unfortunately, the second to last move was that one that forever changed his soul. Just like people, dogs have a breaking point, and Lion had reached his. He had been through more in one year than any dog should ever have to go through in a lifetime. His last move was to a home where he was loved and cared for by a handful of people, his advocates for many months. Unfortunately, it was too late. The pain and suffering he had endured in some of his previous places was more than Lion could overcome. The light in his eyes was gone and he was suffering. In the arms of the people who loved him dearly, we whispered our goodbyes and told him how much we loved him. Humans had failed him. As we kissed him goodbye, we promised Lion that we would do our best to ensure no dog would ever have to endure what he had in his last year. At that moment, we dedicated ourselves to unlocking hope for all dogs by giving a little piece of our hearts to every single one that we can save.

I live in rural Ms. I volunteer as a foster here for a small animal rescue, Yellow Rabbit. I foster momma dogs with puppies. I’m on my second foster litter of 5 at the moment. My first foster experience litter, The Peanuts Gang were accepted at Gals. There were 7 we sent. Gals went above and beyond I feel during the process. They were very precise in their requests making sure we had healthy, happy pups to be matched up with approved families. They worked so hard making sure these babies had the perfect home that fit their needs and personalities. Through all informative info requested, photos and videos my pups had homes waiting before they arrived. I was in awe! Here this does not happen here. Animals are not considered a priority by the masses and there are only small groups who are actual activists for animal welfare and awareness. Trying to make people aware of the importance of spay and neuter being essential. Through my experience with Gals I have been given a new hope. A hope that someday we here can have something as essential as Gals here. Gals is saving lives, inspiring and working above and beyond to bring awareness to animal welfare. We are thankful and blessed to be able to partner with them. Through their organization I also get to watch the 7 babies I watched birthed into this world and loved as my own for over 3 months get their happily ever after. After seeing this all unfold it’s made it easier to let this next group begin that same journey. The goodbye is the hardest part now that Gals has proven they are exactly who and what they say they are and stand for. They fully deserve this honor.

A Rejoyceful Animal Rescue is a wonderful organization filled with great people who go above & beyond to help all cats & dogs that come into the rescue. I am also an adoptee who adopted 1 of the cats from a hoarding situation Rejoyceful stepped in to help with. We have recently taken in dozens of cats from 3 hoarding situations. These animals needed lots of medical attention, lots of love, & socialization. Many of the hoarding cats have already found loving homes & our goal is to find homes for all cats at the rescue. The rescue also helps families who are struggling to feed their pets by proving cat food/dog food to those in need. It is just a place for them to crash before their next step into a foster or adoptive home. Currently, we have about 30 cats and 10 dogs in our shelter. We do our best to make the animal's time here the best it can be. When they are in their kennels we play calming doggie music and they get enrichment actives. As we do not have a fenced in yard area outside, on nice days we schedule SniffSpots for our shelter residents! It is a great way that they can explore a new space and get some energy out.

Rescues are frequent. Re-homings are more frequent. Re-homings differ from rescues in the fact that we will have a history of the dog and its need. Puppies don’t normally need to be placed until they get bigger than the owner had intended and therefore are not as common in rescue. Please keep in mind that most “rescue/rehome dogs” are placed because of behavioral problems, most, but not all. Many of the dog’s issues were due to lack of training and socialization. Most problems can be addressed and corrected in a stable and loving home. If you really want a Berner, do tons of research. Our advice is to attend shows, join a BMD club and research breeders. If you would like to be considered for a rescue or re-homing, please read our policy’s on the Adopting page. The mission of the HMBMD Rescue program is to take in dogs of Bernese Mountain Dog parentage that are in shelters, surrendered by their owners, or that have become lost and abandoned, and to place them in permanent pet homes in order to help provide a safe harbor that they might otherwise be destroyed or abandoned.

Emotional Rescue partners with canine "first responders" to get the hard-to-adopt dogs, nurses them to their best possible health, (or holds them as they cross the bridge), and promises each they will be loved from now on. Warrior Dog Rescue

Warrior Dog rescue is a non-profit organization based in Savage, MN that is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and finding adoptive homes for dogs that have been abandoned, abused, or neglected. We are celebrating our 6th year in rescue and have saved over 3,400 dogs to date. When we reflect on that number we think that each one of those dogs had a foster hero that YES to saving them! We think about all the visits to the vet, the training, the full food bowls, walks, belly rubs, and all the healing that was given to each of them through the love and safety we were able to provide. Knowing that we were able to help them heal and be ready to love their forever family is a blessing beyond compare. Our storybook is filled with all the Warrior Dogs who have come into our lives and forever imprinted on our hearts. The Warrior Dog family continues to save these sweet souls because they all deserve to the know the gift of love and safety. There is still work to be done and by the grace and selflessness of our volunteer and foster teams, along with our generous donors we will continue. There are so many pups even as you read this that are alone and sick, abandoned in kill shelters and on roadsides, living a life filled with fear and abuse. We are steadfast in our commitment to continue to make a difference, one dog at a time.

This organization started as a grass roots organization bringing awareness to the chained backyard dog. It has since educated the public of the many detriments of chaining a dog and has spread the word and now people do not just pass by saying ‘poor dog’ they know there is support and help for this dog. UMDR is solely responsible for this awareness and is proud to know that many other organizations have brought this rescue effort into it’s fold. They continue to move forward with many programs and outreach for their community and beyond.

We adopted a wonderful husky boy named Quinn 3 years ago. Angela brought him up to our house 25 miles north of her, to meet with our two other dogs, and see if they were compatible. She spent a good deal of time that first visit, making sure we all walked together, and got used to each other. Then she took him back for the next week while his neutering surgery healed, and brought him back up. The adoption fee was nothing compared to all the items he came with. Tracking collar, because huskies like to explore. (got to use it twice till we found his escape hatch) Dog bed, snake venom shots, heartworm shots, all other shots. We have rescued 6 dogs over the years, and this was the best experience of all.

I first became involved with Operation Freedom Ride in 2022 when I applied to adopt one of their recues. At that time I also applied to become a foster and to volunteer on their adoption team. I adopted from them in September, it was a wonderful experience. I continue to volunteer on their adoption team interviewing potential adopters. Over the years I have volunteered for two other dog rescues. I enjoyed working for those rescues and it gave me a good background in rescue work. It also allowed me to have something to compare OFR's rescue work with. OFR is outstanding in their organizing skills, everyone on the different teams is well-versed in their position, this makes for the best possible experience for both the rescue animal and the adopter. When I am interviewing potential adopters they often comment on how easily the process flows and how knowledgeable everyone is. It takes a team of dedicated, animal loving people to make a rescue work well, OFR certainly has all the elements of that.

My husband and I have adopted two cats and one dog from Colonial Capital. The dog is a blind-from-birth foxhound that we adopted when he was 5 months old. Someone found him dumped in the woods and took him to CCHS. Colonial Capital knew something was wrong with his eyes, and they drove almost 100 miles to take him to a veterinary ophthalmologist to see what could be done for him. His eyes were non-functioning, but he’s healthy otherwise, so they got to work to get him adopted. There was something about this dog that spoke to us, and we adopted him on the spot. CCHS worked with us to provide us with resources on how to care for a blind dog, and they were available to answer any questions we had. Our dog is now 4 years old and the most loving and independent pup you’d ever meet! CCHS didn’t give up on him, and they won’t give up on any animal that comes their way. Our cats are not special needs pets, but CCHS made sure they went to a good home as well. They do wonderful work!

I found TMAR one day on Facebook right after both my parents died in early 2020. I was already a pet lover having had 7 dogs and 2 cats at the same time for several years. The uniqueness of this rescue, it’s back story, and it’s unwillingness to give up has kept me supporting them since then. They have a global following for their rescue in their sparsely populated part of upper eastern North Dakota. Terrible weather, rural communities with little resources, and non existent state concerns for animal safety and welfare are daily problems they face. And yet they keep on going. They have been building a large new facility for two years that they are paying for as they go. We all help to finance this along with our rescue support. TMAR wants the youth of their area to participate in the animal care when the facility opens. They are a fabulous organization doing their best to help the unwanted and stray animals in their part of ND. They are worthy of any praise and financial help they get. ❤️

We love our boy Grayson! He came from Southern California, where he was found wandering the streets with a prolapsed rectum. Jenifer Alcorn at SCHS made sure he was taken in for emergency surgery. She drove down from Brookings Oregon, paid for his extensive vet bill, and transported him, as well as several other rescues back to SCHS. As soon as he arrived, he was placed in a foster home, so that he would receive the vital aftercare needed to insure a successful recovery. I work at a local veterinary hospital, and Jenifer consults with our doctor and uses our services often. I fell in love with our boy as soon as I saw him! I took him home and we continued his aftercare. I am fortunate enough to be able to take him to work with me, where he is loved by our whole team, as well as our clients!! I’ve been both a walker and a foster and the staff is so loving and supportive of the volunteers. The dogs are happy and well taken care of! It’s funny taking them for walks because when it’s time to go back, they pretty much want to run back to the rescue because they are so loved there… for a short time it’s ‘home’.

I have been impressed with the care and professional treatment I have received as a volunteer, and their support and close monitoring of their fostered dogs. As a former non-profit CEO and professional biologist, I am also impressed with their regular and effective communication and wise use of NBRAN resources. I've been volunteering with The Hotel for Homeless Dogs since last Fall and have had a great experience with them! Everyone is super friendly and professional. The dogs are so well cared for and loved. The kennels are clean and the building is colorful and fun. They get lots of treats, pup cups, and kongs too! They also have a volunteer program where you can take the dogs for walks or playdates. And of course, they're always looking for fosters to open up more space so they can save more dogs! They had a few instances recently with flooding from the local river, but the amazing community pulled through and helped them get back on their feet. Highly recommend this shelter if you're looking for a dog or looking to support a local rescue!

It is hard to put into words and quantify the gratitude I feel for the Almost Home Canine Rescue (AHCR). They have grown our family and hearts by 2 sweet dogs. Because they actually take the dogs and cats in need into their homes, we felt comfortable asking all our questions and making multiple visits to see if these dogs were right for us. We knew their medical history and if they were behaved around children. The AHCR kept the dogs healthy and safe in a loving home until we could adopt them. They asked questions and required a tour of our home so they knew the animal was going to a good home. The way this organization is run, really creates the most successful outcome possible for the animals. Our family highly recommends Almost Home Canine Rescue.

I followed Proverbs for about a year before I adopted a dog from them last Aug 2024.i was constantly impressed with their level of care for animals that were truly desperate for help. They always made sure any animal, in their care, got all of their needs met no matter the cost or length of time it took. From puppies and kittens to seniors, Proverbs helps them all. I searched their site constantly when adding a furry friend to our family. I loved that they placed animals in fosters and truly knew each animals needs and personality. When going through their adoption process, their attention to detail was amazing. We adopted an older dog and could not be happier with how she, Dolly, has fit into our family. Proverbs walked us through the process with kindness and support. And, any animal adopted from them is also returned to them, if an animal owner passes away or can no longer care for their pet. Proverbs is committed, to their rescues, forever! I love this organization and what they do for rescued animals, often in rural places where there is no animal shelters.

At the time, we had always owned small dogs and just admired the breed of Labradors through the stories others shared until one day we saw the most emaciated, filthy, sad looking yellow boy that we couldn’t get out of our heads. I came across a dog who shared her name with my mother—surely a sign that I was meant to take her for a walk, just to say hello…..obviously she was coming home with me. She just had to pass the cat test, an essential task since we already had 2 [rescue] cats. That night they called and said they’d never seen such an excitable pup so docile around a cat. Our Pack Animal Rescue Inc
    https://sniffspot-staging.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/placeholder.png
    WisconsinUS
Our Pack Animal rescue is one of the greatest assets to my life! I got two amazing loving dogs from Our Pack. I started fostering and fell in love with my puppets and she has filled a hole in my heart from my older dog that past away last year. Our Pack takes in the dogs that need the love. My dog came with a softball size mass and watching the progress and transformation was all because of Our Pack giving her a second chance! My other dog that I adopted came with pins etc in his leg from being hit by a truck. Since I can no longer foster I volunteer and it's exciting to see first hand the work and love the rescue working hard and invest time for dogs to be adopted to the best homes! I love getting out and seeing other volunteers and bond! This is an amazing rescue and is one of a kind!

I have been fostering for Fetch for almost 4 years now in addition to being a volunteer for home visits and event coordination. I also adopted a dog from Fetch. They have always supported me and made me feel like I was making a difference. They truly care about the dogs they rescue and go the extra mile to ensure they find the best possible home. Their return rate is very low as a result.
