Laila's Legacy Animal Rescue

#15 in United States, #1 in Washington DC, #1 in Washington

Laila's Legacy was founded with a mission to ensure dogs impacted by breed bias and behavioral or physical challenges have a chance at a better life. Laila, our name sake, was an incredible dog who had a behavioral challenge that caused aggression towards dogs. Laila loved her humans, and especially our Co-Founder, Ashe. She was a large bully breed so her size combined with local breed bias meant sometimes people were afraid of her. But that didn't stop her from winning people over with her goofy energy. The rescue she was with did not have the resources to support Laila and couldn't find a suitable partner to take on her care because of her size and breed. As a result she was euthanized. Laila's Legacy was founded to save dogs like Laila. We never want a dog to be euthanized because an owner, a volunteer, or an organization didn't have the resources or because breed bias stopped them from getting the help they deserved. Dogs like Laila deserve a chance at life and that's what we're here to do!

With a focus on community partnerships, this forward-facing approach works to ensure safe and healthy environments for people and pets. The department promotes responsible pet ownership, implements programs to reduce animal overpopulation, and has formed innovative partnerships and programs to increase the City’s effectiveness in supporting animals and humans in Mobile. As part of this approach, a newly modernized Animal Services facility is currently in design and will be built in a new location central to all parts of the City, and many new positions are also being added to further our mission and programs. In 2005 Last Chance Arkansas was founded as a 100% volunteer based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based out of Central Arkansas. Last Chance AR believes in advocating for the abused, abandoned, and neglected animals across the state that cannot speak for themselves. Working in conjunction with various clinics, Last Chance AR travels statewide to urban and rural communities to provide comfort, safety, and love to animals in need. Hundreds of lives have been saved through our efforts, which include a spay and neuter program for impoverished pet owners, frequent visits to rescue animals from shelters suffering from a desperate lack of funding, and the complete inability for any of our patient and dedicated volunteers to turn down a creature in need. We serve as a resource to our community and local pet owners by providing education and information on responsible pet ownership including the importance of spay/neuter, positive behavior training and good nutrition. We work with committed volunteers, veterinarians, fosters, and trainers to provide health care and temporary homes to animals deserving of another chance. Our number one priority is ensuring the health of all of our dogs and carefully screening and well matching ‘furever” homes.

They thoroughly vet potential adopters to make sure the dogs are a right fit for the household, and because they foster most of the rescued pets first, they are able to provide excellent information which also helps ensure a good fit. We were not in the market for dog, rescue or otherwise. We were at a dog park in Stamford with my daughter and her designer pup. And then HE walked in. First day out with his foster mom, Becky with a blue adopt me sign on. I went over and that was it. He had the most soulful eyes and we bonded immediately. Becky and I chatted for a while, I learned his story--rescued in the South with his two brothers, in a shelter for 6 months while all 3 were treated for distemper and he had just come North that week. He still had some issues with heartworm, whatever. I didn't care. In the 2.5 years since we brought him home, he has added so much joy to our lives. He is gentle and sweet--never barks unless he thinks we are in danger. We renamed him Max because he is MAX-IN-A-MILLION. Love him so.

    Adopt a Golden Atlanta

Adopt a Golden Atlanta [AGA] is a volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to finding warm, loving permanent homes for Golden Retrievers [both purebred and high golden mixes] in order to prevent them from becoming strays or adding to the shelter overpopulation. If a non-golden is best friends with a golden who is surrendered to us, non golden will not be left behind and will accompany the golden into our program and placed with the golden to live together in their new home. Golden Retrievers, regardless of medical needs or age, will receive comprehensive evaluation, spay/neutering services, veterinary care, behavioral training if required, and safe passage into a permanent loving home. In addition to providing those services, Adopt a Golden Atlanta is intent on treating dog owners who are faced with surrendering their dogs with the utmost respect, understanding and compassion. It is also our obligation to educate and assist the metropolitan Atlanta general public, and dog owners specifically, regarding issues such as responsible pet ownership, spay/neutering, obedience training, and veterinary/specialists referrals. Our goal is to reduce the number of Golden Retrievers sent to shelters. AGA will never allow a golden to die in a shelter. AGA relies solely on donations and has a 501(c)(3) classification with the IRS. Your donation is tax deductible. We also meet the requirements for corporate matching, employee giving and volunteer grant programs.

We have both fostered and adopted from Dark Horse Dogs. I don’t even know where to start, we love them for so many reasons. To start, it is very hard to find a rescue that will let the fosters have final say if they do not like a potential adopter. Dark Horse Dogs allows all of their fosters a final say. It ensures the dog gets a home that is its absolute best fit so that it is truly their forever home. No one knows a dog better than their foster family. Dark Horse Dogs is amazing with providing their dogs proper medical care. If I’ve ever had a medical concern, I’m always allowed to bring the dog in to the vet immediately. Not only do they provide great medical care for all their dogs but they also work with fear free trainers that use positive reinforcement when needed for behavioral issues. I love that they make their adopters sign contracts saying they won’t use things like prong, choker, electric collars and anything that can hurt a dog. A volunteer is always available if you have a question or concern, literally at any hour. They always take urgent dogs, over and over and over they show up for the urgent dogs. Often time these urgent dogs have medical needs and it never stops them from taking them. They’re truly a rescue for all the underdog dogs. I could go on and on and on about how amazing they are but on top of it all, they’re hilarious. You’ll never see a sad story, they make the most out of terrible situations and you’ll end up in tears from laughing so hard if you scroll long enough on their Facebook page. They’re super relatable and inappropriate and it helps get their dogs adopted. We’ve fostered for several rescues. They’re truly the best and always put the dogs and their needs first.

A Purposeful Life Animal Rescue & Sanctuary is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit volunteer-based animal welfare organization dedicated to rescuing homeless dogs and cats directly within our community, overcrowded shelters and other unforeseen circumstances. We were founded in 2022 by a small group of animal advocates in Iowa, after recognizing the need to support not only strays and relinquished animals in our area, but areas all across the country. Our startup mission is to offer support to the many local animals in need of homes, by partnering with area shelters and rescues. In addition, we are committed to providing behavioral, medical and low cost resources to people who are considering surrender, in an effort to keep their pets in their homes and out of the shelter system

Founded by Beatrice Martin Peck in 1946 to serve Franklin County's homeless animals, Prairie Paws' first name was the Franklin County Humane society. Through her own expense and effort, Beatrice established and named the first building The Bea Martin Peck Animal Shelter on March 25th 1947, which was completed and welcomed it's first residents in 1948. Beatrice and her volunteers also investigated reports of animal cruelty, and their efforts led to the enactment of many ordinances and regulations regarding animal care that remain today. Beatrice never stopped advocating for helpless animals until her death in 1967. The animal shelter she founded would continue to save lives for more than 60 years after her passing. In 2010 a similar group of hard-working animal advocates designed, funded and built a state-of-the-art facility under the current name "Prairie Paws Animal Shelter". Prairie Paws Animal Shelter has grown tremendously but is still a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) animal shelter operating under the same philosophies with which it was established over 70 years ago. The Manhattan location, also known as the T Russell Reitz Animal Shelter, was added in 2023 in partnership with the City of Manhattan KS and other area municipalities. Roughly 5,000 animals a year are served through our various programs at our two facilities.

The Tier Haven family is comprised of volunteers, adopters, and donors who have a passionate love for these working breeds and all of their quirks. We are brought together by the dogs that steal our hearts while chewing the shoe collection. Tier Haven Rescue, Inc was originally incorporated in 1996 under the name ARK Project, Inc and is a long standing member of the animal rescue community in Kentucky. Originally an all-breed rescue Tier Haven shifted to focus on working dogs with the rise of breed specific legislation which was leading to larger numbers of German Shepherds, and other working dogs, being euthanized. We are rooted in Kentucky with a strong passion for enacting change within the state which has a long journey towards building our animal welfare laws. Even as breed specific legislation has dwindled there are still large numbers of working dogs finding themselves at risk of euthanasia due to a lack of breed knowledge and/or training. Tier Haven is committed to giving these dogs a second chance and we are all honored to be part of their paths to a better life.

Rescue Charlie’s Friends was established in 2018 because we love dogs and want them to have the best life possible. Many dogs lost their homes due to fire, floods or hurricanes. Others have been abandoned, neglected or abused. Whatever the cause, our mission is to rescue them and match them with a loving forever family. Most of our dogs come from high-kill shelters. The shelters do the best they can but due to limited facilities, dogs can’t stay long. Dogs must be moved out quickly or be put down. These are Charlie’s Friends. These are the dogs that we focus on. We stay in touch with shelters and volunteers in Texas, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and elsewhere. We bring the dogs to Maine where Fosters care for them until they are adopted. We rescue as many dogs as we can but we always need more help.

Our family adopted our first pup Willow from KTLH in 2019. They rescued her and her three litter mates from a shelter in Tulsa, OK and brought her all the way to Maryland where she had excellent care in her new foster home before she came to us. After we realized that Willow needed a sibling, we adopted our second dog, Poppy from KTLH in 2020. Prior to her adoption, Poppy had been attacked and had an extensive medical recovery period, but KTLH new they could find a good home for her when she was released from medical quarantine. We are forever grateful for KTLH and their commitment to taking in dogs that certainly would have been euthanized otherwise. Our dogs bring us so much joy every single day and we can't imagine life without them.
  • Key to lions heart rescue Logo

    Key to lions heart rescue

Key to Lion’s Heart Rescue was founded in January 2018 in honor of Lion, a dog who made a tremendous impact on so many lives. Lion was dumped at a very high kill shelter where his time was up. Without knowing his past, he was pulled by a rescue and placed into a home. Lion was then moved nine times over the course of one year in an effort to find the right home. Unfortunately, the second to last move was that one that forever changed his soul. Just like people, dogs have a breaking point, and Lion had reached his. He had been through more in one year than any dog should ever have to go through in a lifetime. His last move was to a home where he was loved and cared for by a handful of people, his advocates for many months. Unfortunately, it was too late. The pain and suffering he had endured in some of his previous places was more than Lion could overcome. The light in his eyes was gone and he was suffering. In the arms of the people who loved him dearly, we whispered our goodbyes and told him how much we loved him. Humans had failed him. As we kissed him goodbye, we promised Lion that we would do our best to ensure no dog would ever have to endure what he had in his last year. At that moment, we dedicated ourselves to unlocking hope for all dogs by giving a little piece of our hearts to every single one that we can save.

Being part of Reed’s Rescue for the past 20 months has been amazing! The rescue is 100% volunteer and to witness what we can do with passion, dedication, and big hearts is life changing. We work with senior and fospice dogs. I’ve seen how saving a senior life has not only impacted the pup yet saved a human…from loneliness, heartbreak, or even making the existing household a little more loving. Senior dogs definitely do not get enough attention and are easily the first ones to go, especially with the rise of surrendered dogs, it’s extra hard to see a dog who has been with a family it’s entire life to be left on the steps of a shelter. Scared. Confused. Forgotten. But Reed’s Rescue doesn’t forget. We work tirelessly to spring these seniors, no matter their condition or the medical cost, and work to find them a forever match. It’s a beautiful reminder that no matter how poorly the pup was cared for, or forgotten in the middle of the night, that it still has so much love to give. We want to be able to allow the senior pups to love until the end.

Gals Best Pal is a super supportive and happy environment to work in. The volunteers and directors are some of the best that I have worked with in my 13 years in rescue. You have really landed on a gem if you have any connection to Gals Best Pal and I am not saying this as I am a volunteer and hope to foster in the future when my schedule opens up. With experience volunteering at other shelters and rescues prior to here, this is the most well run, thorough, and caring rescue I have seen or been apart of. I actually miss the rescue when I take days off. Gals Best Pal really works with applicants to find the right dog, not just a dog to bring into their forever family. I think this is amazing as not many places do this which results in many returns, increased stress on adopters/pups, and further burdens the rescue system. I have adopted two rescues, one from a shelter and the other from a different rescue and the processes are completely different. I am thankful to have this group of people by my side as we help as many pups as we can both locally and around the country find homes.

As the literal “last hope” of the dogs we serve, our southern fosters pull dogs and puppies from partner shelters in Arkansas. What I find most compelling about ARAR is that they really do put the needs of the animal first. ARAR does not discriminate if the animal is "too old" or "too sick/injured". Unless of course, the animal is UNABLE to be saved and ending the animals suffering is THE ONLY option. I have had the pleasure of fostering and adopting wonderful special needs/hospice animals from ARAR. If it wasn't for ARAR willing to take on special needs cases and their amazing fosters, ARAR would not be able to serve their community in the way they do. It takes a village to do animal rescue. It is just a place for them to crash before their next step into a foster or adoptive home. Currently, we have about 30 cats and 10 dogs in our shelter. We do our best to make the animal's time here the best it can be. When they are in their kennels we play calming doggie music and they get enrichment actives. As we do not have a fenced in yard area outside, on nice days we schedule SniffSpots for our shelter residents! It is a great way that they can explore a new space and get some energy out.

Rescues are frequent. Re-homings are more frequent. Re-homings differ from rescues in the fact that we will have a history of the dog and its need. Puppies don’t normally need to be placed until they get bigger than the owner had intended and therefore are not as common in rescue. Please keep in mind that most “rescue/rehome dogs” are placed because of behavioral problems, most, but not all. Many of the dog’s issues were due to lack of training and socialization. Most problems can be addressed and corrected in a stable and loving home. If you really want a Berner, do tons of research. Our advice is to attend shows, join a BMD club and research breeders. If you would like to be considered for a rescue or re-homing, please read our policy’s on the Adopting page. The mission of the HMBMD Rescue program is to take in dogs of Bernese Mountain Dog parentage that are in shelters, surrendered by their owners, or that have become lost and abandoned, and to place them in permanent pet homes in order to help provide a safe harbor that they might otherwise be destroyed or abandoned.

I started Volunteering with the Winona Humane society when I was a freshman in college. I loved being able to walk and socialize with dogs because I missed my dogs at home. My Sophomore year I decided to adopt an emotional support dog. The shelter was very fitting to what my needs were and they just rescued a 9 year old beagle. Her name was Cricket and she lived outside for most of her life. Unfortunately she had liver disease, and the vet told me the only thing I can do is to give her love. She was my best friend and my baby, but after a year her liver was so bad that all my love was unable to heal her. She passed away on November 27th 2023. The humane society welcomed me back to volunteer and give my love to dogs ready to be adopted. The Winona Humane Society gave me hours of volunteer, but more importantly, they matched me with my Cricket.

As an avid supporter and foster connector for multiple states, I will say all put forth their best intentions but Stray Rescue of St.Louis is the epitome of what a rescue strives to be. To give up their time, own money, and to tell everyone upfront they are in heavy debt from the bills currently but will not turn away an animal on its deathbed speaks heavy for who they are as a rescue. Every rescue is full of people who will die for the animals they save but Stay Rescue of St. Louis shows a group of people who would die and be brought back just to ensure an animals well being.

This organization started as a grass roots organization bringing awareness to the chained backyard dog. It has since educated the public of the many detriments of chaining a dog and has spread the word and now people do not just pass by saying ‘poor dog’ they know there is support and help for this dog. UMDR is solely responsible for this awareness and is proud to know that many other organizations have brought this rescue effort into it’s fold. They continue to move forward with many programs and outreach for their community and beyond.

    https://sniffspot-staging.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/placeholder.png
449 Joe English Rd, New Boston, NH 03070
    new bostonNew HampshireUS
I first became aware of Second Chance Ranch Rescue as an adopter. My husband and I had only had one dog that we had adopted from our local SPCA, and she had passed the week of Thanksgiving 2021. Our dog was perfect to us, but we knew if anything happened to us she would have had a difficult time in a shelter. She had crate anxiety, noise phobia, dog reactivity and general anxiety. After we said goodbye we realized that Abby had taught us too much not to pay it forward and open our hearts and home again. Second Chance Ranch Rescue (SCRR) fell onto our radar because of their mission: helping misunderstood dogs. At her core Abby, our last dog, was misunderstood to everyone but us. I began following them on Facebook and became invested in the story of Isabella, a 6-7 year old pocket Pitbull who needed to be the only dog in a home that also didn't have children. SCRR was having such a hard time finding a home for her, and throughout all of it they couldn't understand it because Isabella LOVED people and was such a gentle dog. I followed her story for months, all while saying I wasn't ready to adopt. After Isabella had been there for over 4 months with no applications my husband and I reached out to SCRR to see if we could meet Isabella and see if it was a fit. What I loved about the rescue immediately is that they spent so much time talking to us about Isabella, her needs and explaining why she needed to be the only dog. They were candid with her challenges for dog reactivity and also discussed what they had been working on with her to help with it. We talked at length about ourselves, our prior dog, and the challenges she faced and how we worked on those. It was clear that as much as we were interested in Isabella, they were considering what dog we would be a good fit for. That day we met two dogs, one we hadn't even had on our radar, and Kristin who is in charge was candid about both dogs. Most importantly she didn't force an adoption on us at all. She wanted to give us room to consider the adoption and be sure that we were ready to open up to Isabella. We very quickly decided on the way home that we were. Shortly after adopting Isabella I began volunteering with them. I was blown away by just how much they did to provide enrichment for the dogs in their care, that they worked on behavioral issues to be sure they understood them and would be able to find the best fit for the dogs. I watched them invest so much time in meet and greets for dogs and make the hard decision to say no to some adoptions because things weren't perfect -- dogs didn't get along, the adoptable dog didn't get along with each member of the family. Whatever the reason there was no shame to the families involved but they wanted to do right by the dog and the family. The job they do is HARD. But throughout all of it they are truly some of the most compassionate people you could ever hope to meet. The mission statement on their website is the cornerstone for how they conduct themselves daily, and they are unwavering in their commitment to the dogs in their care and the families they support. And the best thing about them is the surrenders you DON'T hear about. That they provide assistance and guidance to people in the community to try to help situations work whenever possible.

I adopted my new pup, Marley (formerly known as Aubie) in January of this year. I could tell from the start that A Good Dog Rescue was incredibly caring and passionate about saving animals and making sure they're placed in the best homes. Lisa is quite selfless and has transformed her very home into a safe haven for these dogs. The night I arrived to pick up Marley, Lisa was meticulously inspecting dogs, making sure everyone was ok and multitasking to perfection. Volunteers were on deck and were incredibly on task with every dog that was coming in. I've gone into rescue organizations that couldn't do half of what I saw that evening. I literally left in tears and was in complete awe. If and when I choose to adopt again, I will only go to A Good Dog Rescue!

I found TMAR one day on Facebook right after both my parents died in early 2020. I was already a pet lover having had 7 dogs and 2 cats at the same time for several years. The uniqueness of this rescue, it’s back story, and it’s unwillingness to give up has kept me supporting them since then. They have a global following for their rescue in their sparsely populated part of upper eastern North Dakota. Terrible weather, rural communities with little resources, and non existent state concerns for animal safety and welfare are daily problems they face. And yet they keep on going. They have been building a large new facility for two years that they are paying for as they go. We all help to finance this along with our rescue support. TMAR wants the youth of their area to participate in the animal care when the facility opens. They are a fabulous organization doing their best to help the unwanted and stray animals in their part of ND. They are worthy of any praise and financial help they get. ❤️

I am so thankful that I found such an amazing shelter. I don’t know any other shelter that does everything that this shelter does. I adopted my Husky through Husky Halfway House. They saved him from being euthanized at a shelter in California and drove him all of the way to their rescue in Oklahoma. After my application to adopt my boy and was approved, they drove him from Oklahoma to my house in Indiana. They told me that they have my back and my Husky’s back for his entire life. They also said that if something ever happened that they would take him back. They really care about every single one of the Huskies that they rescue and for life. They save so many Huskies and do all that they can to find them loving homes. Now my boy is living his best life with his Husky brother, German Shepherd mix sister, and Chihuahua sister. He even got to see snow for the first time this winter. I couldn’t recommend them enough!

We got our girl Winnie from Proverbs 12:10 in 2022. I had never gone through a rescue organization before but had heard wonderful things about Proverbs. I was so impressed with how thorough the process was to make sure a good match was made. We actually did a trial week with a different dog that sadly didn't work out, but the rescue found another home for him quickly. And they kept us in mind because a few months later they contacted me about our Winnie and thought she would be perfect for us, and she was! So grateful for the work they do. And we have an online alumni group that is full of happy adopters and their furbabies.

Lobo served at my side until he was 18 years old my service dog, best friend, and soulmate. He saved my life countless times and got me through many challenging days.
