Laila's Legacy Animal Rescue

#15 in United States, #1 in Washington DC, #1 in Washington

Laila's Legacy was founded with a mission to ensure dogs impacted by breed bias and behavioral or physical challenges have a chance at a better life. Laila, our name sake, was an incredible dog who had a behavioral challenge that caused aggression towards dogs. Laila loved her humans, and especially our Co-Founder, Ashe. She was a large bully breed so her size combined with local breed bias meant sometimes people were afraid of her. But that didn't stop her from winning people over with her goofy energy. The rescue she was with did not have the resources to support Laila and couldn't find a suitable partner to take on her care because of her size and breed. As a result she was euthanized. Laila's Legacy was founded to save dogs like Laila. We never want a dog to be euthanized because an owner, a volunteer, or an organization didn't have the resources or because breed bias stopped them from getting the help they deserved. Dogs like Laila deserve a chance at life and that's what we're here to do!

With a focus on community partnerships, this forward-facing approach works to ensure safe and healthy environments for people and pets. The department promotes responsible pet ownership, implements programs to reduce animal overpopulation, and has formed innovative partnerships and programs to increase the City’s effectiveness in supporting animals and humans in Mobile. As part of this approach, a newly modernized Animal Services facility is currently in design and will be built in a new location central to all parts of the City, and many new positions are also being added to further our mission and programs. UCAPS not only takes in animals who need rescuing, but also partner with other organizations to make spay and neuter clinics more accessible. With the limited funding our city allots to them, I am amazed at all the services they are able to offer. My family and I rescued our beloved family dog Baxter from UCAPS in 2013. Baxter was a sweet Boston terrier, who was probably 3 when we got him, and had been caught in live traps multiple times and returned to his original family. After the second time, UCAPS told the family if they found him in a live trap again they would have to take him in. This illustrates UCAP’s commitment to giving families a chance to care for their animals, but intervening when necessary. Baxter lived a long happy life with our family, and I am so grateful to UCAPS for finding the perfect fit for both us and Baxter, and for commuting to caring for animals who are not as easy to find homes for.

Last Chance AR believes in advocating for the abused, abandoned, and neglected animals across the state that cannot speak for themselves. Working in conjunction with various clinics, Last Chance AR travels statewide to urban and rural communities to provide comfort, safety, and love to animals in need. Hundreds of lives have been saved through our efforts, which include a spay and neuter program for impoverished pet owners, frequent visits to rescue animals from shelters suffering from a desperate lack of funding, and the complete inability for any of our patient and dedicated volunteers to turn down a creature in need. We serve as a resource to our community and local pet owners by providing education and information on responsible pet ownership including the importance of spay/neuter, positive behavior training and good nutrition. We work with committed volunteers, veterinarians, fosters, and trainers to provide health care and temporary homes to animals deserving of another chance. Our number one priority is ensuring the health of all of our dogs and carefully screening and well matching ‘furever” homes.

I have been so impressed with the caliber of volunteers and staff at Adopt-a-Golden and by the organization's meticulous planning, care and consideration. The staff make sure that each dog to be fostered is in a safe, clean, loving environment, receiving healthy food and lots of love and attention. The rigorous process the agency follows to find foster families and adoptive families helps ensure that the dogs will be raised by caring, compassionate, patient, responsible families who understand what it takes not just to raise a dog -- especially one who might have experienced neglect or abuse -- but to restore a dog to a healthy, happy, trusting, thriving state. They also understand that different dogs will match best with different people and the staff do a great job of helping to ensure that each dog ends up with a family that will be a good fit for it. Not only is Adopt-a-Golden committed to rescuing Golden Retrievers, it is also committed to ensuring that the organization is a positive, nurturing and fun place for staff and volunteers -- and the community.

    Adopt a Golden Atlanta

Adopt a Golden Atlanta [AGA] is a volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to finding warm, loving permanent homes for Golden Retrievers [both purebred and high golden mixes] in order to prevent them from becoming strays or adding to the shelter overpopulation. If a non-golden is best friends with a golden who is surrendered to us, non golden will not be left behind and will accompany the golden into our program and placed with the golden to live together in their new home. Golden Retrievers, regardless of medical needs or age, will receive comprehensive evaluation, spay/neutering services, veterinary care, behavioral training if required, and safe passage into a permanent loving home. In addition to providing those services, Adopt a Golden Atlanta is intent on treating dog owners who are faced with surrendering their dogs with the utmost respect, understanding and compassion. It is also our obligation to educate and assist the metropolitan Atlanta general public, and dog owners specifically, regarding issues such as responsible pet ownership, spay/neutering, obedience training, and veterinary/specialists referrals. Our goal is to reduce the number of Golden Retrievers sent to shelters. AGA will never allow a golden to die in a shelter. AGA relies solely on donations and has a 501(c)(3) classification with the IRS. Your donation is tax deductible. We also meet the requirements for corporate matching, employee giving and volunteer grant programs.

Founded by Beatrice Martin Peck in 1946 to serve Franklin County's homeless animals, Prairie Paws' first name was the Franklin County Humane society. Through her own expense and effort, Beatrice established and named the first building The Bea Martin Peck Animal Shelter on March 25th 1947, which was completed and welcomed it's first residents in 1948. Beatrice and her volunteers also investigated reports of animal cruelty, and their efforts led to the enactment of many ordinances and regulations regarding animal care that remain today. Beatrice never stopped advocating for helpless animals until her death in 1967. The animal shelter she founded would continue to save lives for more than 60 years after her passing. In 2010 a similar group of hard-working animal advocates designed, funded and built a state-of-the-art facility under the current name "Prairie Paws Animal Shelter". Prairie Paws Animal Shelter has grown tremendously but is still a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) animal shelter operating under the same philosophies with which it was established over 70 years ago. The Manhattan location, also known as the T Russell Reitz Animal Shelter, was added in 2023 in partnership with the City of Manhattan KS and other area municipalities. Roughly 5,000 animals a year are served through our various programs at our two facilities.

The Tier Haven family is comprised of volunteers, adopters, and donors who have a passionate love for these working breeds and all of their quirks. We are brought together by the dogs that steal our hearts while chewing the shoe collection. Tier Haven Rescue, Inc was originally incorporated in 1996 under the name ARK Project, Inc and is a long standing member of the animal rescue community in Kentucky. Originally an all-breed rescue Tier Haven shifted to focus on working dogs with the rise of breed specific legislation which was leading to larger numbers of German Shepherds, and other working dogs, being euthanized. We are rooted in Kentucky with a strong passion for enacting change within the state which has a long journey towards building our animal welfare laws. Even as breed specific legislation has dwindled there are still large numbers of working dogs finding themselves at risk of euthanasia due to a lack of breed knowledge and/or training. Tier Haven is committed to giving these dogs a second chance and we are all honored to be part of their paths to a better life.

Rescue Charlie’s Friends was established in 2018 because we love dogs and want them to have the best life possible. Many dogs lost their homes due to fire, floods or hurricanes. Others have been abandoned, neglected or abused. Whatever the cause, our mission is to rescue them and match them with a loving forever family. Most of our dogs come from high-kill shelters. The shelters do the best they can but due to limited facilities, dogs can’t stay long. Dogs must be moved out quickly or be put down. These are Charlie’s Friends. These are the dogs that we focus on. We stay in touch with shelters and volunteers in Texas, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and elsewhere. We bring the dogs to Maine where Fosters care for them until they are adopted. We rescue as many dogs as we can but we always need more help.

    Key to lions heart rescue

Key to Lion’s Heart Rescue was founded in January 2018 in honor of Lion, a dog who made a tremendous impact on so many lives. Lion was dumped at a very high kill shelter where his time was up. Without knowing his past, he was pulled by a rescue and placed into a home. Lion was then moved nine times over the course of one year in an effort to find the right home. Unfortunately, the second to last move was that one that forever changed his soul. Just like people, dogs have a breaking point, and Lion had reached his. He had been through more in one year than any dog should ever have to go through in a lifetime. His last move was to a home where he was loved and cared for by a handful of people, his advocates for many months. Unfortunately, it was too late. The pain and suffering he had endured in some of his previous places was more than Lion could overcome. The light in his eyes was gone and he was suffering. In the arms of the people who loved him dearly, we whispered our goodbyes and told him how much we loved him. Humans had failed him. As we kissed him goodbye, we promised Lion that we would do our best to ensure no dog would ever have to endure what he had in his last year. At that moment, we dedicated ourselves to unlocking hope for all dogs by giving a little piece of our hearts to every single one that we can save.

Last hope has made the foster experience smooth and makes sure to be very informative about incoming dogs so fosters have the opportunity to choose a foster dog that fits their routine. LHK9 is a 501(c)(3) registered non-profit all-breed dog rescue based in Massachusetts. We are dedicated to saving abandoned, neglected, and abused dogs from high-kill shelters in Central Arkansas and beyond. Though our rescue efforts are focused in the Central Arkansas area, we also serve as a resource for local dog surrenders, shelters, and special rescue efforts in other areas. We don’t discriminate on the basis of age, pre-existing medical conditions, or breed, because every dog deserves to know love. As the literal “last hope” of the dogs we serve, our southern fosters pull dogs and puppies from partner shelters in Arkansas. While in foster, each dog receives love, care, and medical treatment, then receives a health clearance and transports to New England. After a mandatory 48-hour quarantine stay and an additional health clearance, each dog is picked up and fostered by a northern foster family who serves as a gateway to his/her adoptive home, affectionately known as a FURever home.

Here at ARAR, we see our shelter as a safe transition point for many animals in need. Our goal is to keep animals in our shelter for the least amount of time possible. It is just a place for them to crash before their next step into a foster or adoptive home. Currently, we have about 30 cats and 10 dogs in our shelter. We do our best to make the animal's time here the best it can be. When they are in their kennels we play calming doggie music and they get enrichment actives. As we do not have a fenced in yard area outside, on nice days we schedule SniffSpots for our shelter residents! It is a great way that they can explore a new space and get some energy out.

Rescues are frequent. Re-homings are more frequent. Re-homings differ from rescues in the fact that we will have a history of the dog and its need. Puppies don’t normally need to be placed until they get bigger than the owner had intended and therefore are not as common in rescue. Please keep in mind that most “rescue/rehome dogs” are placed because of behavioral problems, most, but not all. Many of the dog’s issues were due to lack of training and socialization. Most problems can be addressed and corrected in a stable and loving home. If you really want a Berner, do tons of research. Our advice is to attend shows, join a BMD club and research breeders. If you would like to be considered for a rescue or re-homing, please read our policy’s on the Adopting page. The mission of the HMBMD Rescue program is to take in dogs of Bernese Mountain Dog parentage that are in shelters, surrendered by their owners, or that have become lost and abandoned, and to place them in permanent pet homes in order to help provide a safe harbor that they might otherwise be destroyed or abandoned.

Love fostering/volunteering for Mary's Dogs. All of the staff is dedicated to placing pups in a great forever home. What stands out to me is they will ALWAYS take a dog back if an adoption doesn't work out for whatever reason. Some dogs are returned with a lot of issues and the staff never give up on the dog, no matter how long it takes to work with the dog and find the perfect family.

    Mary’s Dogs Rescue & Adoption

Mary's Dogs - Rescue & Adoption Through every step of the rescue and adoption, connections are made between people, cultures, and dogs. Our community is extremely grateful for the supportive network that embraces us. Thank you to our partners in the south, our team, and all our adoptive families for being the Hero in a dog’s life. Why adopt a Mary's Dog? All dogs deserve a chance to find a loving and caring home. Many are abandoned or neglected or never given the chance of a good life. As soon as our dogs are in the care of our southern partners, they are treated as family members while awaiting transport to New Hampshire. Our professional team begins caring for the dogs as soon as they arrive at our state-licensed facility to ensure the dogs successfully transition into forever homes. We provide specialty collars and leashes, yummy treats, toys and even homemade chicken stew. The dogs are examined by our veterinarian and then microchipped. Once they are granted a NH Health Certificate and observed by our dog savvy rescue team, they are ready to be loved by you! We know our dogs. It’s important you find the right dog for you and your family. We want all our adoptions to be successful and are available to answer your questions before and after you’ve brought your dog home. Please keep in touch! Join our growing community of dog parents and best friends. Come to one of our events, learn about dogs, buy a dog a gift , — share photos! We love every dog we rescue. Good dogs make best friends. Will you be the Hero in a Mary’s Dog’s life?

Our last two dogs, both hard-to-adopt pit bulls, came from NM Dog. (We adopted the second one after the death of the first one.) Both dogs were extensively rehabilitated by NM Dog prior to becoming available for adoption. This was not an easy task given the abuse they had been subjected to. Both dogs were/are sweet, affectionate, a bit goofy and full family members.

I adopted my dog in 2020 from Pawfect Match. He had been rescued from an abusive home situation. Working with them was very easy in trying to find the "pawfect" match for me. Having cats made it a bit more challenging but they were very helpful in making sure I was comfortable. After spending a few years with my dog I decided to try fostering with them and have fostered 5 dogs over the last year. They love all the dogs they rescue and work to ensure they are well taken care of, even medically challenging cases, and do their very best to match each dog with their best forever home.

I found TMAR one day on Facebook right after both my parents died in early 2020. I was already a pet lover having had 7 dogs and 2 cats at the same time for several years. The uniqueness of this rescue, it’s back story, and it’s unwillingness to give up has kept me supporting them since then. They have a global following for their rescue in their sparsely populated part of upper eastern North Dakota. Terrible weather, rural communities with little resources, and non existent state concerns for animal safety and welfare are daily problems they face. And yet they keep on going. They have been building a large new facility for two years that they are paying for as they go. We all help to finance this along with our rescue support. TMAR wants the youth of their area to participate in the animal care when the facility opens. They are a fabulous organization doing their best to help the unwanted and stray animals in their part of ND. They are worthy of any praise and financial help they get. ❤️

The problem is excessively worse in the south and in California or this rescue tends to operate. Any animal that comes to their doorstep they find a bed for. Recently, someone dumped two boxes of rats at a local business, and they helped find homes for everyone of them. They have a SCHS Thrift Store that funds the care of the animals. It also houses a cat condo, which helps in fosters and adoptions. And for people like me who like to go visit. The dictionary defines.’ Rescue’ as to free from danger, evil. To save, deliver. This is the consummate description of our Southcoast Humane community. NBRAN helped my family in a difficult situation. We rescued a Brittany mix in 2019 and we found she was dog reactive. After a couple of scary encounters with our older dog, we sought out several behavioral trainers. This helped us keep our household manageable for several years until I became pregnant this past year and the fighting started again. NBRAN was there to help, knowing our situation from early on, they suggested rehoming before having the baby for the safety of everyone. It was heartbreaking and so so hard, but ultimately will lead to a happier life for all parties. NBRAN organized a transport and over 15 volunteers helped move our Brittany from Central Oregon to Southern California where she will stay in a kennel on 3 acres until they find the right fit for her. NBRAN has continued to share updates with me, even though they don't have to, and it seems our girl is transitioning great to her new normal. We are so grateful to NBRAN and all of the staff and volunteers.

The dogs are so well cared for and loved. The kennels are clean and the building is colorful and fun. They get lots of treats, pup cups, and kongs too! They also have a volunteer program where you can take the dogs for walks or playdates. And of course, they're always looking for fosters to open up more space so they can save more dogs! They had a few instances recently with flooding from the local river, but the amazing community pulled through and helped them get back on their feet. Highly recommend this shelter if you're looking for a dog or looking to support a local rescue!

The people in this rescue work tirelessly not only to help to lovable dogs, but also the less easy to love medical cases that need a lot of hands on sacrifice, TLC, funds. They never turn down the hard ones and I’ve seen countless transformations you wouldnt believe. They are also very careful to not over accept dogs into the rescue which is equally important for the health of both the dogs, and the volunteers!

We adopted our dog Rocket - FKA Wyatt - from friends for life mid-covid and loved the experience. We were originally thinking about another dog at their shelter and FFL was honest about some.of the challenges we might have with that dog and ended up decided it was best with another family. I appreciated their commitment to finding the best home for each dog. We had the 7 day "trial" period with our now dog and really appreciated having that time to make sure he would work with our family. On the first day of the trial we noticed our dog had an infected cyst on his neck and FFL was quick to help us get it taken care of. Couldn't have asked for a better experience or dog to have joined our family.

My first rescue dog was from AR, she was scared and clearly didn't understand she was finally home. She in a terror bolted out the front door and short after was hit by a car. I was devastated. I felt like a failure and was sure the rescue would be mad they let me have this sweet dog and now she could die. I ran her to the vet ER and they got her stable then informed me the care and surgery she needed would be 6000 or more. I had maybe 300 of that. I knew I needed to do what was best for my sweet Charlie so I called the rescue. They put her back under their legal care and paid all her medical bills. I was so happy knowing Charlie would live. But sad as I feared and assumed they would not let me have her back. I visited her every day for 2 weeks while she recovered at the hospital. The day before her release I was notified that, Arctic rescue would still be letting Me keep my sweet Charlie. 6 years later Charlie's is my shadow and protector She never leaves my side and always is there to accept snuggles and snacks.

It also focuses on socialization and lets the people stop by and play with the pups, lets volunteers take them out for walks or hikes, or keep them longer.
