Sky Sanctuary specialize in the humane capture and rescue of stray, fearful and injured animals from the streets of Phoenix, Arizona, the surrounding desert areas and local shelters. We often rescue the abandoned, lost and forgotten animals. Fiercely advocating for the animals in our care. Often our animals have extensive and complex medical needs that require a profound level of specialty medical care. Not only do we invest in our animal's physical health, we utilize a trusted group of trainers to build confidence, empower and improve our animal's mental well-being in order to live peaceful, happy lives in family homes. We are very different from other animal rescue organizations. We are "boots on the ground" in our community while passionately fight for the dogs and animals no one else has the courage to take on. We have a knack for finding ourselves in pretty breathtaking scenarios- some call it divine intervention, others call it luck. We live by the mantra "if not me then who?". Laila's Legacy Animal Rescue

#15 in United States, #1 in Washington DC, #1 in Washington

Laila's Legacy was founded with a mission to ensure dogs impacted by breed bias and behavioral or physical challenges have a chance at a better life. Laila, our name sake, was an incredible dog who had a behavioral challenge that caused aggression towards dogs. Laila loved her humans, and especially our Co-Founder, Ashe. She was a large bully breed so her size combined with local breed bias meant sometimes people were afraid of her. But that didn't stop her from winning people over with her goofy energy. The rescue she was with did not have the resources to support Laila and couldn't find a suitable partner to take on her care because of her size and breed. As a result she was euthanized. Laila's Legacy was founded to save dogs like Laila. We never want a dog to be euthanized because an owner, a volunteer, or an organization didn't have the resources or because breed bias stopped them from getting the help they deserved. Dogs like Laila deserve a chance at life and that's what we're here to do!

Sweet Home Doberman Rescue - I have been familiar with and an occasional donar for years. Now I am fostering a female through her Spay and heartworm treatments. This rescue went above and beyond to bring her and her puppies into foster from a terrible situation. The board members thoroughly investigate the ability of potential fosters and adoptees to validate that the dogs (including home visits and references)will be loved and cared for. They have a process for selecting the best home and people. Online instruction in fostering and basic dog care is required of fosters and adoptees and updates are given regularly on Facebook also. The board is responsive to their volunteers. If an adopted or foster dog needs to be rehomed the rescue requires that it be returned to them so that a good home will be found.

With a focus on community partnerships, this forward-facing approach works to ensure safe and healthy environments for people and pets. The department promotes responsible pet ownership, implements programs to reduce animal overpopulation, and has formed innovative partnerships and programs to increase the City’s effectiveness in supporting animals and humans in Mobile. As part of this approach, a newly modernized Animal Services facility is currently in design and will be built in a new location central to all parts of the City, and many new positions are also being added to further our mission and programs. We look forward to serving your needs!

Exceptional board and super (mostly volunteer) caring staff keep up the facility, love and care for these unloved “thrown away”animals. They’ve obtained and opened a house as an adoption center. UCAPS is and has been a mainstay in our community doing their best to take care of the animals, educate the public on huge need to spay and neuter. The veterinarians work closely with them to offer these services and many others in conjunction with UCAPS. UCAPS is in constant need of food and supplies to continue commitment. Any help in any way would be so very much appreciated.

Last Chance AR believes in advocating for the abused, abandoned, and neglected animals across the state that cannot speak for themselves. Working in conjunction with various clinics, Last Chance AR travels statewide to urban and rural communities to provide comfort, safety, and love to animals in need. Hundreds of lives have been saved through our efforts, which include a spay and neuter program for impoverished pet owners, frequent visits to rescue animals from shelters suffering from a desperate lack of funding, and the complete inability for any of our patient and dedicated volunteers to turn down a creature in need. We serve as a resource to our community and local pet owners by providing education and information on responsible pet ownership including the importance of spay/neuter, positive behavior training and good nutrition. We work with committed volunteers, veterinarians, fosters, and trainers to provide health care and temporary homes to animals deserving of another chance. Our number one priority is ensuring the health of all of our dogs and carefully screening and well matching ‘furever” homes.

We are a two dog family and both of our pups are rescues. After the passing of my dog, my family and I ventured out to Thomasville humane society. While there we were greeted by a wonderful team, who helped us select our next forever pup. See I have autistic son, he can be loud and he stims. So we needed just the right pup. During our time there we met three different dogs and each member of the team knew the personalities of every dog we met. Then we found the one! The one that just came in and laid down and let my child scream and run around the room and this pup wasn't affected. Just a few years later when it was time to add another pup, we were right back to Thomasville humane society. Our next adopted pup had spent close to a year with the humane society, but she found love at our house. We are grateful that we've been able to offer comfy couches and tons of spoiling to Titan formerly known as Zeus and Lily formerly known as Goldie over the last several years.

    Adopt a Golden Atlanta

Adopt a Golden Atlanta [AGA] is a volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to finding warm, loving permanent homes for Golden Retrievers [both purebred and high golden mixes] in order to prevent them from becoming strays or adding to the shelter overpopulation. If a non-golden is best friends with a golden who is surrendered to us, non golden will not be left behind and will accompany the golden into our program and placed with the golden to live together in their new home. Golden Retrievers, regardless of medical needs or age, will receive comprehensive evaluation, spay/neutering services, veterinary care, behavioral training if required, and safe passage into a permanent loving home. In addition to providing those services, Adopt a Golden Atlanta is intent on treating dog owners who are faced with surrendering their dogs with the utmost respect, understanding and compassion. It is also our obligation to educate and assist the metropolitan Atlanta general public, and dog owners specifically, regarding issues such as responsible pet ownership, spay/neutering, obedience training, and veterinary/specialists referrals. Our goal is to reduce the number of Golden Retrievers sent to shelters. AGA will never allow a golden to die in a shelter. AGA relies solely on donations and has a 501(c)(3) classification with the IRS. Your donation is tax deductible. We also meet the requirements for corporate matching, employee giving and volunteer grant programs.

I have both fostered a dog with and then adopted a different dog from Dark Horse Dogs. It was my first time fostering, and I loved that leadership were directly involved with me from the start. They answered all my questions and helped make sure the dog I chose to foster would work with us having a small resident dog. They provide each foster with all of the medical and supplies needed for each foster dog. I felt like I could reach out to anyone in the rescue when I needed help. I relied heavily on Tara the leader for day to day things/emergencies, they also set up a “buddies” program so each new foster would be able to text with and get support from more experienced fosters. They also have an active Facebook volunteers page that is a good place for resources. They do a good job of understanding that each dog will have different needs and levels of support required. They are incredible at managing that, and ensuring fosters and their dogs are successful. After our foster dog went to our forever home, we vacation watched a different dog while his foster was out of town. After realizing how well he fit in with our family and small resident dog, we realized we couldn’t see him go. So we adopted him! I could write a novel about how much I love him. But I want to focus on the rescue. Dark Horse Dogs doesn’t just focus on saving dogs (though 90% of the Chicago Animal Care and Control dogs listed as “urgent” end up being rescued by DHD). They focus on ensuring that each dog finds their perfect match and forever. They do this by presenting each dog in an honest light - including their struggles and ways they need extra support. Some rescues hide those things to try and get dogs adopted - only for those dogs to end up homeless once again. With DHD, you know exactly the kind of dog you will be adopting. With the rescue being based on a network of volunteers and fosters instead of having a shelter building, the fosters get to intimately know each and every dog. This truly helps the dogs to find their best forever home. And the rescue also realistically reviews each application, only moving forward with a meet and greet if the applicants and dog seem like a good fit. I could and would be happy to sing DHD’s praises all day, every day. Planning to keep fostering for them in the future when I move to a larger home!

Sometimes we work with the Indiana State Veterinarian to methodically document all that is needed to care for the animals or prosecute if neglect and cruelty is suspected. Our startup mission is to offer support to the many local animals in need of homes, by partnering with area shelters and rescues. In addition, we are committed to providing behavioral, medical and low cost resources to people who are considering surrender, in an effort to keep their pets in their homes and out of the shelter system

Founded by Beatrice Martin Peck in 1946 to serve Franklin County's homeless animals, Prairie Paws' first name was the Franklin County Humane society. Through her own expense and effort, Beatrice established and named the first building The Bea Martin Peck Animal Shelter on March 25th 1947, which was completed and welcomed it's first residents in 1948. Beatrice and her volunteers also investigated reports of animal cruelty, and their efforts led to the enactment of many ordinances and regulations regarding animal care that remain today. Beatrice never stopped advocating for helpless animals until her death in 1967. The animal shelter she founded would continue to save lives for more than 60 years after her passing. In 2010 a similar group of hard-working animal advocates designed, funded and built a state-of-the-art facility under the current name "Prairie Paws Animal Shelter". Prairie Paws Animal Shelter has grown tremendously but is still a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) animal shelter operating under the same philosophies with which it was established over 70 years ago. The Manhattan location, also known as the T Russell Reitz Animal Shelter, was added in 2023 in partnership with the City of Manhattan KS and other area municipalities. Roughly 5,000 animals a year are served through our various programs at our two facilities.

The Tier Haven family is comprised of volunteers, adopters, and donors who have a passionate love for these working breeds and all of their quirks. We are brought together by the dogs that steal our hearts while chewing the shoe collection. Tier Haven Rescue, Inc was originally incorporated in 1996 under the name ARK Project, Inc and is a long standing member of the animal rescue community in Kentucky. Originally an all-breed rescue Tier Haven shifted to focus on working dogs with the rise of breed specific legislation which was leading to larger numbers of German Shepherds, and other working dogs, being euthanized. We are rooted in Kentucky with a strong passion for enacting change within the state which has a long journey towards building our animal welfare laws. Even as breed specific legislation has dwindled there are still large numbers of working dogs finding themselves at risk of euthanasia due to a lack of breed knowledge and/or training. Tier Haven is committed to giving these dogs a second chance and we are all honored to be part of their paths to a better life.

I always knew I wanted to open my heart and home to dogs in need, but I never imagined the incredible journey that awaited me at Rescue Charlie's Friends. The staff was incredibly helpful, patiently guiding me through the adoption process and ensuring the perfect match for all of us. Adopting from Rescue Charlie's Friends wasn't just about gaining three amazing dogs; it was about giving them a second chance at a happy life. Seeing them blossom in their forever home, full of love and joy, is the most rewarding experience. If you're looking to add a furry companion to your life, I can't recommend Rescue Charlie's Friends enough. They have a heart of gold and a passion for finding loving homes for dogs in need. You might just walk in looking for one dog, but you might leave with three times the love, just like me!

Rescue Charlie’s Friends was established in 2018 because we love dogs and want them to have the best life possible. Many dogs lost their homes due to fire, floods or hurricanes. Others have been abandoned, neglected or abused. Whatever the cause, our mission is to rescue them and match them with a loving forever family. Most of our dogs come from high-kill shelters. The shelters do the best they can but due to limited facilities, dogs can’t stay long. Dogs must be moved out quickly or be put down. These are Charlie’s Friends. These are the dogs that we focus on. We stay in touch with shelters and volunteers in Texas, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and elsewhere. We bring the dogs to Maine where Fosters care for them until they are adopted. We rescue as many dogs as we can but we always need more help.

    Key to lions heart rescue

Key to Lion’s Heart Rescue was founded in January 2018 in honor of Lion, a dog who made a tremendous impact on so many lives. Lion was dumped at a very high kill shelter where his time was up. Without knowing his past, he was pulled by a rescue and placed into a home. Lion was then moved nine times over the course of one year in an effort to find the right home. Unfortunately, the second to last move was that one that forever changed his soul. Just like people, dogs have a breaking point, and Lion had reached his. He had been through more in one year than any dog should ever have to go through in a lifetime. His last move was to a home where he was loved and cared for by a handful of people, his advocates for many months. Unfortunately, it was too late. The pain and suffering he had endured in some of his previous places was more than Lion could overcome. The light in his eyes was gone and he was suffering. In the arms of the people who loved him dearly, we whispered our goodbyes and told him how much we loved him. Humans had failed him. As we kissed him goodbye, we promised Lion that we would do our best to ensure no dog would ever have to endure what he had in his last year. At that moment, we dedicated ourselves to unlocking hope for all dogs by giving a little piece of our hearts to every single one that we can save.

Here at ARAR, we see our shelter as a safe transition point for many animals in need. Our goal is to keep animals in our shelter for the least amount of time possible. It is just a place for them to crash before their next step into a foster or adoptive home. Currently, we have about 30 cats and 10 dogs in our shelter. We do our best to make the animal's time here the best it can be. When they are in their kennels we play calming doggie music and they get enrichment actives. As we do not have a fenced in yard area outside, on nice days we schedule SniffSpots for our shelter residents! It is a great way that they can explore a new space and get some energy out.

Two years ago I signed up to take on my first foster through Heart of Michigan Bernese Mountain dog rescue. We had just lost our 16-year old chihuahua, and I needed to fill the hole in my heart. Besides, our lab missed his best friend. We foster-failed out if the shoot, with the world’s cutest, sweetest Bernidoodle, Fozzie. Feeling grateful, we offered to foster mill mamas. We have taken in 12 fosters since then. The condition they arrived in was heartbreaking: covered in sores, so thin I could fit my hands around her waist. One mama knew only one trick: to fall to her back with all four paws straight in the air, and head to the side with tongue hanging out, at a sound like a gunshot. She had learned to pretend she was dead to survive. All were traumatized. People who buy dogs need to take a moment to think about how they got into this world, and research what happens to the Mamas. Despite being beaten down, and some hanging into life, there was a spark in all of them: A tiny light that got bigger with each day of being clean, having a bed to sleep in, and learning how to receive love, feeling grass on their paws, and understanding the meaning of a toy. Our doodle, Fozzie, has been the best teacher in “how to be a dog”. If people who buy dogs knew of the horrific abuse so many dogs receive in the process of making factory puppies, no one would use their money to support such a process. Everyone would adopt. I’ve been impressed with Heart of Michigan. They eat, sleep, and breath the welfare of these dogs everyday. They have 50 dogs in foster homes on any given day. They arrange caravans of volunteer drivers to bring dogs on their Freedom Rides, even three states away. They are good examples in how to be good humans.
  • Heart of Michigan Bernese Mountain Dog Rescue Logo

Heart of Michigan Bernese Mountain Dog Rescue

Rescues are frequent. Re-homings are more frequent. Re-homings differ from rescues in the fact that we will have a history of the dog and its need. Puppies don’t normally need to be placed until they get bigger than the owner had intended and therefore are not as common in rescue. Please keep in mind that most “rescue/rehome dogs” are placed because of behavioral problems, most, but not all. Many of the dog’s issues were due to lack of training and socialization. Most problems can be addressed and corrected in a stable and loving home. If you really want a Berner, do tons of research. Our advice is to attend shows, join a BMD club and research breeders. If you would like to be considered for a rescue or re-homing, please read our policy’s on the Adopting page. The mission of the HMBMD Rescue program is to take in dogs of Bernese Mountain Dog parentage that are in shelters, surrendered by their owners, or that have become lost and abandoned, and to place them in permanent pet homes in order to help provide a safe harbor that they might otherwise be destroyed or abandoned.

As an avid supporter and foster connector for multiple states, I will say all put forth their best intentions but Stray Rescue of St.Louis is the epitome of what a rescue strives to be. To give up their time, own money, and to tell everyone upfront they are in heavy debt from the bills currently but will not turn away an animal on its deathbed speaks heavy for who they are as a rescue. Every rescue is full of people who will die for the animals they save but Stay Rescue of St. Louis shows a group of people who would die and be brought back just to ensure an animals well being.

Once they are granted a NH Health Certificate and observed by our dog savvy rescue team, they are ready to be loved by you! We know our dogs. It’s important you find the right dog for you and your family. We want all our adoptions to be successful and are available to answer your questions before and after you’ve brought your dog home. Brianna puts her heart, soul and everything she has into the dogs (and a few cats) in her care. Most of this is done all on her own with a very select few that she trusts to call in for help. I adopted my overweight Blue Heeler from OOAK after he was rescued from a puppy mill. They wrote him an attention grabbing bio on facebook that prompted me to take an unplanned half-day off work and drive an hour and a half to meet him. The shelter staff were patient and accommodating with our visitation and meet&greet with our other dog, allowing us to occupy a visit room with him for hours to make sure we'd all be a good fit. They are cautious with puppymill rescues, making sure adopters know that they will need patient and gentle adopters.

I came across Huskey Halfway House a couple of years ago because of another Huskey page I follow, Pine Ridge Siberians. I was blown away by the dedication, determination, sacrifices, and love Huskey Halfway House staff showed towards the furbabies. I follow several other rescue organizations as well but none of them go to the extremes that Huskey Halfway House does to find these furbabies a forever home. They don't give up on a single furbaby. If they can't find them a forever home, they keep them. If the family doesn't take care of the furbaby, they take them back. If one of their Huskeys which has been microchipped gets placed in a shelter, Huskey Halfway House rescues them again. None of the other shelters that I have ever seen go to these extremes except for Huskey Halfway House. I wish they could get a large benefactor to support their work. They deserve it. They are irreplaceable in the rescue world. I contribute to their work as much as possible because I hope to see them grow even larger.

I can not say enough about Jennifer and her compassion! Jennifer really cares about these animals and the correct placement. She offers foster to adopt program which is amazing. Not every dog you adopt actually will work in your home, so this way you get a chance to make sure it’s the right fit and forever home. She is always there for the community helping in so many ways! She has been there for us numerous times when I could not see a vet and was concerned about our babies we adopted from her. In one instance we had a puppy for four months and he was just not able to adjust to our living situation. It was not right for him. We decided as much as we loved him it wasn’t fair to him. Jennifer helped us place him in the best forever home he could have ever got! We kept him of course u til that happened. Without her we may never have found this amazing place for him. The facility is amazingly clean and always smells nice! I have been to many shelters so I can attest to that! I can’t say enough about her and her team!

Just over a year ago I began searching for a companion dog. Many of the rescue organizations made the search difficult by requiring several personal references by people who would answer unknown numbers on their phones. None of my friends received any messages from any of these shelters. It was hard for me to even get email responses from other shelters. Oregon Dog Rescue was very responsive by phone and email, the application process was straightforward. I was able to obtain an appointment within a few days and the appointment process was seamless and very positive. I fell in love with Bagel immediately and I received a thorough medical record and history. I highly recommend Oregon Dog Rescue to anyone searching for a dog to join their family.

Abby’s is a small foster network in rural PA, but out of all of the rescues I’ve come into contact with, they’re the absolute best! Nicole and the volunteers/fosters impact the lives of so many dogs. They make sure pups are placed in the right homes based on their temperament/personality/quirks (which are tested by their dedicated foster families) and the lifestyle of potential adopters. The application process is thorough so there’s the best chance of compatibility between the dog and their future family. Abby’s keeps track of pups’ progress throughout their entire lives. Once a dog comes into their care, they make absolute certain that that dog will never be let down by people again. The passion and love they show all of these animals is amazing. Being part of their community of adopters is such a gift. We get to keep up with each other’s babies and reach out to a network of like-minded animal lovers if we want to ask for advice.

This rescue has been a great way for so many people to understand the struggles that animals go through when they are in a shelter situation. Now, I am the daughter of Amber the owner and I can just say that Amber really truly cares for the animals in her care as if they were her children. I have had to talk her off the cliff every time we have lost an animal no matter how long they were a part of the rescue. This building has given me my two babies that I don't know what I would do if I didn't have them. One thing that I have truly learned about animals is how much they care about the people around them, and that they don't hold grudges against humans, even if past humans have hurt them. Thank you so much for honoring Champion's Crusaiders Rescue because they deserve so much, and this recognition shows that all the loss has a sad purpose in the animal world.

It is hard to put into words and quantify the gratitude I feel for the Almost Home Canine Rescue (AHCR). They have grown our family and hearts by 2 sweet dogs. Because they actually take the dogs and cats in need into their homes, we felt comfortable asking all our questions and making multiple visits to see if these dogs were right for us. We knew their medical history and if they were behaved around children. The AHCR kept the dogs healthy and safe in a loving home until we could adopt them. They asked questions and required a tour of our home so they knew the animal was going to a good home. The way this organization is run, really creates the most successful outcome possible for the animals. Our family highly recommends Almost Home Canine Rescue.

My family moved to Tennessee in 2003 from Germany (as part of the military). They wanted a dog (which we had not had due to being overseas) and scoured advertisements looking for a purebred dog. Then came a chance trip to Petco to see Proverbs Dogs. That was more than 20 years ago (and now we are on our 3 and 4th dogs from them). So, so many things impress me concerning the way they do their work. The dogs (and cats) are forever dogs with Proverbs meaning they can always go back to them for any reason. Of course, we have kept ours, but still..... Our most recent two came as a bonded pair - Proverbs refused to let them be adopted separately - which has been the very best for us. When my son grew up and left the house to get married - he (of course) got a Proverbs Dog. These folks do such wonderful work with the animals. They are well vetted and well cared for - and as a result we have become forever Proverbs fans, and donate regularly. The need is great - and the workers are few it seems. We do everything we can right now to support them and I can assure you that our support will continue indefinitely. I know that all the rescues are stretched - and stressed emotionally, financially, and in so many other ways. I want to assure you that these folks are so well deserving of the win here, that it brings tears to my eyes as I write this testimonial.

The first concern is for the wellbeing of the resident rescues. The staff has always been so helpful and friendly, very helpful choosing the right kitty. The volunteers are vital to keeping the shelter running and are right there to keep all the cats and dogs well and happy. I've been going to CHA for 40 years and it has been equally well run over the years. When you walk into CHA - you will be amazed that it smells so fresh and clean - not at all like some shelters. Come visit and rescue your next furever family member.
